Many kennel clubs consider the Landseer to be simply a black and white variant of the Newfoundland, but the Federation Cynologique Internationale recognizes it as a separate breed. The breed was named after the British painter Sir Edwin Henry Landseer because in 1838 he created the painting "The Distinguished Member of the Humane Society". A white dog with a black head, black saddle, and black on the rear, it is in every way the same as the Black or Bronze Newfoundlands, with perhaps a slighter bone. They also enjoy the water and draft activities and are a very beautiful addition to the show ring. Here are a few examples of some gorgeous Landseer adults and puppies.
